Atop Steep Mountain Ridges, The Beautiful City of Aizawl

The capital of the North East state Mizoram, Aizawl is a vibrant city that is over 112 years old. Situated atop steep mountain ridges with an altitude of 1,132 mt and bounded by rivers Tlawng and Tuirial, Aizawl is indeed a beautiful destination for travel. The place offers pleasant travel opportunities through the year, the blue skies contrasting with the vibrant greenery, charming timber houses and sunny days is great for a refreshing stay far from the pollution of the cities.

The laid back city has many scenic picnic sites that can be explored. The city itself is interesting to explore with its many bazaars and quaint houses. The roads run parallel to the mountains and it might be quicker to travel certain distances by foot, however the paths maybe steep and a strain to those not used to exertion. Here are some of the places to see and things to do around Aizawl.

Mizoram State Museum

Mizoram State Museum

Situated in Zarkawt, the Mizoram State Museum is definitely worth a visit. At a nominal entry fee of Rs. 5 you can take a tour through the history, culture and traditions of the Mizo people. It provides a foundation for learning more about the interesting lands, their tribes and customs. Items on display include traditional attire, jewellery, old instruments, paintings, etc.

Solomon's Temple

Solomon's Temple

Constructed as a symbol of love and dedication to the Lord Jesus, the Solomon's Temple also locally known as Kohhran Thianghlim is a lovely church. The white structure has an imposing facade that has twelve main doors. Beautiful towers and sculptures of angels blowing the trumpet add to the overall ambience of peace and calm. The church has a seating capacity of 2,000 people and has quickly gained popularity among locals and travellers. The church complex has many tall trees and gardens and is a must-visit place in Aizawl.

Reiek

Reiek

Located at a short distance of 29 km from Aizawl city is a popular sightseeing place in the region, the Reiek Hill. At an elevation of 1,548 mt, the hill overlooks the city and offers panoramic views of the region. Surrounded by lush greenery, the hill also has a heritage village that showcases the traditional life of the Mizo tribes.

Hmuifang

Hmuifang

Another place to visit near Aizawl is Hmuifang Hill, located at a distance of 50 km from the city. Among the less explored regions in Mizoram, the hills are covered with forests that are largely untouched. The place is famous for its natural beauty, the river Tuirial also finds its source here. The festival of Thalfavang Kut is celebrated annually to promote tourism in the region.

Bara Bazaar

Bara Bazaar

Located in the Dawrpui Veng area of Aizawl, the Bara Bazaar is popular for the shopping options it provides both locals and travellers. The area has a mall as well. The streets sell local produce and imported goods from China and other neighbouring regions. The Zion Street is well-known for its variety of clothing on sale.

Tam Dil Lake

Tam Dil Lake

A popular place to visit near Aizawl is Tam Dil Lake, located in Saitual at a distance of 64 km. Presently, the reservoir around the lake supports fishing activities. The lake has many legends associated with it and makes for an interesting evening. Surrounded by greenery the lake makes a great picnic spot.

Vantawng Falls

Vantawng Falls

Among the things to do around Aizawl is to explore the scenic roads that take travellers to many exotic locations. One such is the Vantawng Falls located near Thenzawl, at a distance of 92 km. The beautiful flow of water from a height of 751 ft has the title of being the country's 13th highest waterfall.

Dampa Tiger Reserve

Dampa Tiger Reserve

Spanning an area of over 550 sq km, the Dampa Tiger Reserve is among the places to visit around Aizawl. Situated at a distance of 127 km, the forests are home to a variety of animals and vegetation. You can explore the dense forests and be rewarded with sightings of leopard, Indian bison, Barking Deer, sloth bear, Langur, etc. Many birds and reptiles can also be spotted here.

Food and Stay

Food and Stay

Aizawl has a decent range of restaurants serving fast food as well as authentic cuisine. The traditional cooking in Mizoram involves the usage of plenty vegetables and spices. Meats including fish are prepared and steamed dishes with bamboo are also a local delicacy. Popular dishes include the paanch phoron torkari, chhum han and the fish preparations of misa mach poora.

How to Reach Aizawl

How to Reach Aizawl

By Road: Aizawl is connected to the rest of the country by the NH-54 that traverses through Silchar. Silchar is located at a distance of 168 km.

By Rail: The nearest railway station is located in Silchar in Assam. Travellers can take buses and taxis that are available in plenty to Silchar.

By Air: Aizawl Airport is connected to key destinations in the country including; Kolkata, Imphal, Guwahati, etc.
