Interesting Facts About India Gate in Delhi!

1. National Monument
Being the National Monumnet of India, the India Gate is also one of the biggest war memorials of the World.

2. Design of the monument
The design of India Gate is similar to that of Arc De Triomphe in Paris. The structure's foundation was laid by Sir Edwin Lutyens who was the chief architect of Delhi then. The structure is 42m high. The whole structure is built in marble and in read and pale sandstones.

3. Amar Jawan Jyoti
The eternal flame, Amar Jawan Jyoti, pays homage to the thousands of Indian soldiers who fought during the period 1914-1921 and lost their lives. This unveiling ceremony was done by Mrs. Indira Gandhi , the then Indian Prime Minister, on the Republic Day in 1972. Placed in a shrine, the structure is on a cenotaph made of black marble. A rifle is placed on it, with a soldier's helmet on it.

4. Time to Build the Monument
Though the foundation was laid in 1921, it took around a decade to complete the construction of India Gate.

5. Walls of India Gate
The Walls of India Gate have the names of all the martyred soldiers inscribed on them.

6. Statue of Great George V
There was a statue of Great George V, who was the Emperor of India then, installed at India Gate premises. However, owing to a controversy, the statue was later removed from the site and was installed in Coronation park along with other statues that belonged to the same period.

7. Republic Day Parade
The Republic Day parade takes place here every year on 26th January. This parade starts at Rashtrapati Bhavan and later passes by the India Gate.
