Eclipse Calendar 2024: Know the Dates, Time for Solar Eclipse and Lunar Eclipse

Eclipse Calendar 2024: Did you know that an eclipse never comes alone? The celestial theater orchestrates a captivating performance with not just one, but often two or even three eclipses in a single season. As we delve into the cosmic symphony of eclipses in 2024, we uncover fascinating facts that bridge the realms of science and wonder.

Eclipse Season Unveiled: A Trio of Celestial Events

Our cosmic journey begins with the revelation that a solar eclipse, like a cosmic overture, is typically accompanied by a lunar counterpart. The celestial calendar unfolds with a rhythm, and in the 2024 eclipse season, the first act took place on September 18th with a Partial Lunar Eclipse. This sets the stage for the main event - the second eclipse of the season, a solar spectacle yet to be witnessed. Brace yourselves for the grand finale on October 17th, when an Almost Lunar Eclipse will cast its enchanting glow.

Types of Solar Eclipses

The Sun's grandeur meets the Moon's mystique in four distinct types of solar eclipses. From the subtle beauty of a Partial Solar Eclipse to the captivating ring of fire in an Annular Solar Eclipse, each type carries its unique charm. Total Solar Eclipses, the rarest of them all, offer a momentary plunge into darkness, visible only from a narrow path on Earth.

Solar Eclipses Unveiled: Mostly Partial, Always Mesmerizing

While solar eclipses predominantly manifest as partial spectacles, their allure remains undiminished. Only those within the Moon's shadow witness the grandeur, and for most observers, whether during a total, annular, or hybrid eclipse, the cosmic display unfolds as a captivating partial solar eclipse.

Did you know that the year 2024 will treat us to a celestial spectacle of five eclipses? Among them, two are solar eclipses, and three are lunar. This cosmic dance includes an intriguing "almost lunar eclipse," where the Sun, Earth, and Moon align closely, yet the lunar eclipse remains elusive, creating a celestial puzzle for skygazers.

Lunar eclipse in 2024

Eclipse Season Chronicles: Lunar Overture in March

Our celestial journey begins with a penumbral lunar eclipse, the first eclipse of the year, occurring between March 24 to 25. Although not visible in India, this lunar event will grace the skies over Europe, Australia, Africa, North and South America, northeast Asia, the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Arctic, and Antarctica. During a penumbral lunar eclipse, the Moon traverses Earth's penumbra, resulting in a subtle dimming of its luminance.

According to the Indian Standard Time, the lunar eclipse will start at 10:23 am on 25 March and will end at 3:00 pm

Solar Symphony: April's Total Solar Eclipse

The grand spectacle continues with the year's second eclipse, a total solar eclipse on April 8. Unfortunately, not visible in India, this cosmic show will unfold over North America, the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Arctic, western Europe, and northern South America. As the New Moon positions itself between the Sun and Earth, casting its shadow on the planet, lucky observers in the Moon's umbra's path will witness the Sun's outer corona during totality.

According to the Indian Standard Time, the solar eclipse will start at 9:12 pm on 8 April 2024 and will end at 2:22 am on 9 April. The full shadow of the moon will fall on the sun at 11:47 pm and the eclipse will start to decrease from 1:25 am

The stages of a total solar eclipse include the beginning of the partial eclipse, the onset of totality, the peak of the eclipse, the start of the end of totality, and the conclusion of the partial eclipse.

Lunar Interlude: September's Partial Lunar Eclipse

Returning to the lunar realm, the second lunar eclipse of 2024 unfolds as a partial lunar eclipse on September 17 to 18. Visible in Europe, Africa, North and South America, parts of Asia, the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Indian Ocean, the Arctic, and Antarctica, this event will not be witnessed in India. Unlike a total lunar eclipse, where the Moon fully immerses in Earth's umbra, a partial lunar eclipse only experiences a partial shadow, creating a mesmerizing celestial play.

According to the Indian Standard Time, the lunar eclipse will start at 6:11 am on 18 September and will end at 10:17 am

Ring of Fire: October's Annular Solar Eclipse

October 2 brings the fourth eclipse of the year annular solar eclipse, also known as a 'ring of fire.' This spectacular event will be visible in southern parts of North America, South America, the Pacific, the Atlantic, and Antarctica, but unfortunately, not in India. During an annular solar eclipse, the Moon, positioned farther from Earth, appears smaller than the Sun, creating a striking ring effect.

According to the Indian Standard Time, the solar eclipse will start at 9:12 pm on 2 October and will end at 3:17 am on 3 October. After midnight on 3 October, i.e. at 12:15 am, the moon will completely cover the sun, casting its shadow on the earth. The solar eclipse will start to decrease from 2:09 am on 3 October.

The phases of an annular solar eclipse include partial eclipse, annularity, return to partial eclipse, and end of partial eclipse, each marking a distinct stage in this celestial ballet.

Cosmic Finale: October's Almost Lunar Eclipse

The celestial year concludes with an "almost lunar eclipse" on October 17, an event uniquely challenging to witness as Earth's shadow narrowly misses the Moon. Although not visible from any region on Earth, this mysterious event wraps up the celestial ballet of 2024, leaving us in awe of the cosmic wonders beyond.
