The Ministry of Tourism has enumerated 57 destinations for enhancement under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 initiative, spotlighting India's commitment to bolstering tourism infrastructure across the country. Launched in the fiscal year 2014-15, this scheme is designed to provide financial aid to State Governments, Union Territories (UTs), and Central Agencies for the development of tourism facilities. Over a span of five years, up to 2018-19, the scheme has seen the sanction of 76 projects across 31 States and UTs, with a total investment of Rs. 5292.57 Crore, as per the official records.
The revamp of this scheme into Swadesh Darshan 2.0 aims at fostering sustainable and responsible tourism destinations with a focus on a tourist and destination-centric approach. Among the newly listed destinations, certain locations stand out for their unique appeal and historical significance, making them must-visit spots for travelers. These include the ancient ruins of Hampi in Karnataka, the Ajanta Caves in Maharashtra, the vast mangrove forests of Sundarbans in West Bengal, the mesmerizing landscapes of Leh Ladakh, the architectural marvels of Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh, and the natural beauty of Shillong in Meghalaya.
Hampi, Karnataka
Located 345 km from Bengaluru, Hampi is a historical town recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known for its archaeological significance, it showcases the grandeur of the Vijayanagara Empire through its temples and ancient ruins. The ideal time to explore Hampi is from October to March, offering a glimpse into India's rich cultural heritage.
