Let us know more about Bodh Gaya and why it is so importance:

The primary temple complex and primary tourist destination in Bodh Gaya is the Mahabodhi Temple Complex. The Mahabodhi Temple, also called the Great Awakening Temple, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002.

Buddhism places a great deal of importance on Bodh Gaya. This is due to the fact that Gautama Buddha attained Enlightenment in Bodh Gaya. According to Buddhist texts, Prince Siddhartha attained enlightenment under the sacred fig tree 2600 years ago and later became the Buddha under that tree which is now known as the "Bodhi Tree" to the world. The Mahabodhi temple complex is where the Bodhi tree is located.

The location of Buddha's Enlightenment is symbolized by the Bodhi tree of the present. The original tree deteriorated over time and was eventually felled by a storm. The Bodhi tree we see now that is still standing was planted in 1881 by British archaeologist Alexander Cunningham. A branch of the actual Bodhi tree is claimed to have been transported to Sri Lanka and is said to be still alive.

King Ashoka built it first:

Emperor Asoka constructed the first temple in the third century B.C., and the current temple was constructed in the fifth or sixth centuries. It dates back to the late Gupta era and is one of the earliest Buddhist temples constructed entirely of brick that is still surviving in India. It is thought to have had a significant impact on the evolution of brick buildings over the years.

Since Emperor Asoka constructed the original temple, the balustrades, and the memorial column, the site of the Mahabodhi Temple offers remarkable records of the events connected with the life of Buddha & following worship.

Four major Buddhist sites:

Bodh Gaya, which is close to the Niranjana River, was formerly known as Uruwela. It was also known as Sambodhi, Mahabodhi and Vajrasana until the 18th century CE. Bodh Gaya is the most frequented of the four major Buddhist sites, which also include Lumbini, the place where prince Siddhartha was born, Kushinagar, the place where he attained Nirvana, and Sarnath, the location of Budhha's first sermon.

Major attractions:

The current Mahabodhi Temple Complex at Bodh Gaya consists of the 50-meter-tall grand Temple, the Vajrasana, the sacred Bodhi Tree, and other 6 sacred sites of the Buddha's enlightenment. It is surrounded by numerous ancient stupas and is well-maintained and protected by inner, middle, and outer circular boundaries.

Nearly every country that practices Buddhism has a monastery in Bodh Gaya, including Bhutan, Japan, China, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Cambodia, & Thailand. Some monasteries belong to lesser-known branches of Indian Buddhism. The Mahabodhi temple is conveniently close to all of these.

Every temple has a distinctive architectural design. Each provides guests with a unique chance to get insight into other Buddhist cultures and contrasting architectural designs. The monasteries in Thailand and Bhutan stand out among the numerous noteworthy ones.

Like this, there are many attractions nearby apart from the major ones related to the life of Buddha to mark your presence.
