Banavasi is said be the oldest town in Karnataka; earlier known as Konkanapura, it is a temple town. The main attraction is the Madhukeshwara Temple which was built in 9th century.
It is a historical place on the banks of Varada river in Karnataka. The town was a capital of Kadamba dynasty which ruled for about 2 centuries (345 AD).
Madhkeshwara Temple in Banavasi is said to be built during the reign of Kadambas. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva; it has undergone many architectural changes during the period of Chalukyas and Hoysalas.
Today, this ancient town is a Hindu pilgrimage site in Karnataka. It is worth to explore this enchanting town which is 25 km from Sirsi.
