India is a diverse country that has a major scope for many adventure sports. Travellers usually come here to explore its various attractions or for religious pilgrimages. But there are just a few who actually hunt down the places where they can indulge in various adventure sporting activities. The reason as to why many tourists don't look into this sector is because most of them are ill-informed or are ignorant about it.

If you are thinking adventure tourism outside the country, fret not, India has various sporting events that is sure to set your adrenaline pumping. Here is a guide to the adventure calendar for the year 2015.

Ski Championship

Ski Championship

When: January 18, 2015

Where: Auli, Himachal Pradesh

Skiing is a very popular adventure sport among tourists coming to Auli. It is famous as one of the best skiing sites in the world, with facilities to enjoy Nordic Skiing, Alpine Skiing, and Telemark Skiing. Enthusiastic skiers can also go for slalom, cross-country, and downward skiing actions here. The snowy slopes are around 20 km long and to-and-fro movement is facilitated with the Gondola cable car. The skiing slopes are surrounded by green woody forests and are safe zones for skiing. In the month of January, local ski operators and Winter Games Association holds a Ski Championship here where travellers can participate in this activity sport.

Indian Surf Festival

When: February 6 - 18, 2015

Where: Ramchandi Beach, Odisha

Ramchandi Beach has everything that you need to unwind - sunny beaches, yoga workshops and of course surfing competitions! As night falls, there are some really cool bands and DJs lined up for entertainment and to add more colour, folk dance performances too! In the month of February the beach sees a major crowd as many surfers head here to participate in the Indian Surf Festival here. Enjoy riding the waves in these cool waters and also make sure to explore the region and see the many attractions that it has to offer.

Sandstorm Festival

Sandstorm Festival

When: February 21 - 24, 2015

Where: Ambod Village, Gujarat

The town of Ambod, that is located on the Gandhinagar-Mahudi Highway, plays host to the Sandstorm Festival in the month of February and if you are an adventure seeker then you must be a part of this four-day festival. Tourists can indulge in sports like hang-gliding, hot air ballooning, kite flying and various spectator sports. To add to that, there is a lot you can explore and do in and around Gandhinagar. The Indroda Nature Park, Akshardham Temple and Adalaj Stepwell are must-visit places here.

Holla Mohalla

Holla Mohalla

When: March 7 - 9, 2015

Where: Rupnagar, Punjab

The Holla Mohalla festival is celebrated over a period of three days and starts with mock battles, that are then followed by music and poetry competitions. The Nihang Singhs, members of the Sikh army that was founded by Guru Govind Singh, have kept the tradition alive and perform various daring feats such as Gatka or mock encounters, tent pegging, bareback horse riding, standing erect on two speeding horses and many more. The Nihangs, dressed in their traditional costumes, display their skills in archery, sword fencing, horse riding and shooting. Holla Mohalla has been recognised as a national festival by the Government of India and it is being celebrated in the state of Punjab since 1701. This festival is known to attract loads of tourists from various parts of the country.

Aranmula Vallamkali

Where: Aranmula, Kerala

Noted for its grandeur and long tradition, the Aranmula boat race is considered more as a ritual than a race and takes place during the Onam festival. Legend has it that a devout Brahmin vowed to offer all the requirements for the grand traditional feast on the day of Thiruvonam at the Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple. Once, the boat known as Thiruvona Thoni carrying these offerings was attacked by enemies and in order to protect it people from neighbouring areas sent their snake boats. Later on, this practice evolved into an offering to the lord in the form of a snake boat race. The long snake boats battle it out on the waters for the coveted trophy. Tourists come here from far and wide to be a part of this mega show.

Where: Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir

TheLadakh Marathonisa unique opportunity for runners from India and around the world to run in the remarkable beauty of a high mountain desert region, once acentral stop on the historic Silk Route between Central Asia and India. The various races take place in and around Ladakh and offers runners stunning vistas of mountains, rivers and valleys and will leave you with lifelong memories. The event date is Sunday, 13 September 2015 and all registrations will open in March 2015. Race day will consist of four races namely, 7 km Race, Half Marathon, Marathon and the Khardungla Challenge. So all those of you who wish to participate in these races that take place at an altitude of 3505.2 mt above sea level should head here.

Paragliding World Cup

Paragliding World Cup

When: October 24 - 31, 2015

Where: Bir, Himachal Pradesh

The Bir Billing in Himachal Pradesh is known for its natural beauty and the best paragliding site in the country and perhaps in the world also. It is already a well-known site in the world but now again it would be the main attraction in 2015. After hosting Paragliding Pre-World Cup successfully last year, it has now got the opportunity to host the Paragliding World Cup by the Paragliding World Cup Association, France in 2015. The World Cup would be held from October 24 to 31, in which around 150 top ranked pilots of the world will participate, besides 500 free flying pilots.

Pushkar Camel Fair

Pushkar Camel Fair

When: November 19 - 25, 2015

Where: Pushkar, Rajasthan

Pushkar is known for its world-famous 'Cattle Fair' which is held here every year during the month of November. During this festivity, millions of travellers come here to participate in the festivity that is held. The trading of domesticated animals, mainly camels, is a major attraction in the fair. The fair also hosts a series of cultural events that include puppet shows, camel races and so on. Tourists coming here can enjoy the various cultural and sports events held here. You can also take photographs of adorned camels that are bought here for trading. If you are lucky, you might even get to enjoy a camel ride here.
