Situated on the banks of the river Gomti, Lucknow, also known as the city of Nawabs, is the capital of Uttar Pradesh. Founded by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula, Lucknow served as the capital of the nawabs of Awadh. When the first Mughal ruler of India Bābur captured Lucknow in 1528 the city attained immense importance. Akbar, his grandson made the city a part of Oudh province. Āṣaf al-Dawlah, the nawab of Oudh (now Ayodhya) 1775, transferred his capital from Faizabad to Lucknow.

Lucknow contains notable examples of architecture. The city's most famous attraction is the Bara Imambara and Bhool Bhulaiya, a large and unique tomb complex and an interesting labyrinth built in 1783. The Bara (Great) (1784) is a single-storied structure where Shiʿi Muslims assemble during the month of Muḥarram.

The Rumi Darwaza, or Turkish Gate, was modeled in 1784 on the Sublime Porte in Istanbul. Rumi Darwaza, also known as Turkish Gate, was named after a great 13th-century Muslim Sufi mystic, Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi. This sixty-foot-tall gate was built by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daulah in the year 1784.

The best-preserved monument is the Residency (1800). The Ruins of the Lucknow Residency and 1857 Memorial Museum in a Raj-era compound, which was the scene of the 1857 First Battle for Independence. While the bloody history is immortalized here, The Residency today serves as a shelter to escape the heat, dust, and sounds of the city.

Lucknow also has several impressive monuments and buildings that stand testimony to the magnificent Awadh architecture. Visit Kaiserbagh Palace, Taluqdar Hall, Shah Najaf Imambara, Begum Hazrat Mahal Park, and Rumi Darwaza, the gateway to Lucknow city and one of the most impressive architectural structures in India.

A must-mention is the Jama Masjid, built in 1423 by Sultan Ahmed Shah. Built entirely with yellow sandstone, it is known for its detailed design and architectural style and is regarded as one of India's most beautiful mosques.

The riverfront built on the Gomti river attracts a large number of tourists. As soon as it came into existence, Gomti Riverfront Park became one of the major tourist destinations of Lucknow. Spread over 2 km on the banks of river Gomti, this park is surrounded by a natural environment, which is famous as a picnic spot.
