The name Munnar literally means three rivers in Malayalam owing to its presence between three mountains. Munnar was a summer resort for the British during the colonial era, proof of which is the presence of English country cottages here. A special species of flower, which blooms once in 12 years, Neelakurinji ' is spread like blue sheets on the beautiful mountains here during the kurinji season. This picturesque view attracts people to Munnar.

Munnar has enthralling options like Virgin forests, savannahs, rolling hills, scenic valleys, numerous streams, huge splashy waterfalls, sprawling tea plantations, and winding walkways to offer its visitors. Both Idukki district and Munnar are also famous for the spices found here. Kumily, a plantation town located near Thekkady Wildlife Sanctuary, is known for selling fresh spices. People from all over the country come to the cardamom auction center here to buy the best quality spices.

Eravikulam National Park- Spread over 97 sq km, Eravikulam National Park is around 13 km away from Munnar town. Home to rare species, the biggest attraction of this national park is the Nilgiri Tahr (Nilgiritragus hylocrius), an endangered species of mountain goats.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary - is home to thousands of species of flowers as well as many rare creatures. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is the sanctuary in the state of Kerala where the largest number of reptilian fauna is found, including the mugger crocodile.
