An integral part of the beauty of the southwest coastline of Kerala, Kochi is also known by the name of Cochin. The name Kochi is derived from the Malayalam word kochu azhi, meaning 'small lagoon'. Kochi, known as Cochin until 1996, is a major port city on the Malabar Coast of India bordering the Laccadive Sea. Kochi is part of the district of Ernakulam in the state of Kerala. And in a true sense, the reason for Kochi being a famous port city is its perfect geographical location.  Its location at the northern end of the peninsula, with the Arabian Sea to the west and estuary and proximity to the Western Ghats to the east makes it the Queen of the Arabian Sea. The history of Kochi is 600 years old and it is believed that 12 centuries before Kochi state was established.
