Known as the "Venice of the East" or "Kashmir"s Venice", Srinagar is the summer capital of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Situated on the banks of the Jhelum River, Srinagar is part of the scenic Kashmir Valley, known for its matter-of-course beauty. The name Sri Nagar refers to a Sanskrit word that has two interpretations – one Surya-Nagar, meaning "city of the Sun (Surya), and the other" city of "Shri" (Lakshmi), the Hindu goddess of wealth.
