The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Karnataka, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds from May 12 to May 15. Bengaluru is among the areas that will be affected. The weather may change suddenly, especially in the afternoons and evenings. People in the city are advised to stay safe, avoid unnecessary travel, and take care of loose items at home.

Yellow alert issued across Karnataka
The yellow alert from IMD includes Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka-such as the coastal, northern interior, and southern interior regions. The forecast mentions heavy rain along with thunderstorms and squally winds. Wind speeds may reach 30-40 km/h, with gusts possibly going up to 50 km/h. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) has also predicted widespread rainfall and scattered thunderstorms across the state.
What to expect in Bengaluru
For Bengaluru, the forecast between May 12 and May 15 suggests partly cloudy skies with a chance of light to moderate rain or thundershowers each day. The weather is expected to shift quickly, especially in the late afternoon and evening hours, with strong winds reaching 30-40 km/h. People are being told to stay indoors during lightning, avoid going out during storms, and secure loose items like flowerpots, hoardings, or banners.
Safety advice for the public
Residents of Bengaluru and other affected regions are advised to take safety steps during this stormy period. Authorities suggest staying indoors during thunderstorms and avoiding outdoor activities during heavy rain. People should not travel unless needed, especially when the weather becomes severe. Emergency services are on standby and ready to handle any issues caused by the weather.
Southwest Monsoon may arrive soon
In addition to the current weather warnings, the IMD has also said that the Southwest Monsoon may begin over the South Andaman Sea and parts of the Southeast Bay of Bengal around May 13. In the next four to five days, it may spread to areas like the south Arabian Sea, the Maldives, the Comorin region, and the central Bay of Bengal. This could add to the stormy conditions in peninsular India.
Other regions likely to receive rain
Apart from Karnataka, several southern states and union territories are also likely to see moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds from May 12. These include Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, Telangana, and Lakshadweep. Lightning activity is expected over Lakshadweep.
