Weather Alert: Heavy Rain Expected in Chennai and Delta Districts, Caution for Hill Stations

The Northeast Monsoon has entered its next phase with the onset of a deep depression in the southwest and southeast Bay of Bengal. This weather system, which began in the East Indian Ocean, has now intensified and is moving towards the Sri Lanka-Tamil Nadu coastline. Tamil Nadu, including its capital Chennai, is set to experience significant rainfall starting today.

Heavy Rain Expected in Chennai

Heavy Rain Predicted for Chennai and Nearby Areas

Pradeep John, a private weather analyst, has noted that although the depression is located far from Chennai, the city and its northern areas will see heavy rainfall. These downpours are expected to peak in the evening and nighttime hours, affecting daily life. Districts close to Chennai, such as Puducherry, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, and Kallakurichi, are also expected to receive heavy rainfall during this period.

Delta Districts on High Alert

The delta regions, including Nagai, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Trichy, Perambalur, Ariyalur, and Pudukkottai, have been placed on high alert for very heavy rainfall over the next two days. Due to their location, these districts are directly in the path of the depression, making them vulnerable to intense precipitation.

Tourist Caution for Hill Stations

Tourists planning visits to popular destinations like Kodaikanal and Coonoor are advised to postpone their plans for the next three days. These areas are likely to experience heavy rainfall as the depression moves towards the Arabian Sea. The weather could disrupt travel plans and pose risks to visitors.

As Tamil Nadu braces for this intense weather system, residents and visitors are urged to stay informed through official weather updates and advisories. Authorities recommend avoiding unnecessary travel, especially to areas under heavy rainfall alerts. Those in high-risk regions are advised to take precautions and ensure their safety during this period.

The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is set to bring substantial rainfall across Tamil Nadu, affecting Chennai, the delta districts, and hill stations. Staying prepared and cautious is essential as the state navigates this significant weather event.
