Kolkata: Construction has officially started on the Victoria station, a key segment of the Joka-Esplanade Metro line, marking a significant step in the expansion of Kolkata's metro network. This new station is part of the 16-kilometer purple line, which is presently operational between Joka and Majerhat. The project is spearheaded by the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), as detailed by Telegraph India.
The Victoria station, nestled underground, will span 325 meters in length and have a platform situated 14.7 meters below the surface. This development is crucial for enhancing connectivity within the city. The corridor, beginning at Mominpore, will include four underground stations: Kidderpore, Victoria, Park Street, and Esplanade, making the commute easier for thousands.
Officials have outlined the construction process for Victoria station, which will start with the erection of diaphragm walls. The station slabs will then be constructed using the cut and cover top-down method. For this purpose, various machinery, including cranes, has already been deployed at the site.
To address environmental concerns, approximately 29 trees slated for removal will be transplanted to Kamardanga near Beliaghata. Other preventive measures include vibration-impact studies and health surveys of nearby structures, such as the iconic Victoria Memorial Hall, to ensure minimal disruption to the surroundings.
However, the project has faced hurdles. The defense ministry has not approved the relocation of a market necessary for the construction of the Esplanade station, which is intended to be the terminal stop for the purple line. Despite this setback, metro officials are in continuous talks to find a solution, though a definitive resolution has yet to be reached.
