Indian Railways plans to launch 12 new Vande Bharat sleeper trains in 2026 to improve long-distance travel across the country. These trains are a new version of the popular Vande Bharat trains but are designed specifically for overnight journeys, with sleeping berths instead of just seats. This makes them more

comfortable for trips of around 1,000 to 1,500 kilometres, where passengers would otherwise travel in older express trains with basic sleeper coaches.
High Speed & Advanced Safety Measures
The Vande Bharat sleeper trains are part of a major effort to make rail travel faster, more comfortable, and more modern. They will combine the higher speeds and advanced safety systems of Vande Bharat trains with comfortable sleeping arrangements so people can rest properly on long overnight routes. These trains are expected to cut travel times, reduce fatigue, and offer better reliability compared with many existing services.
Vande Bharat Sleeper Service
The first Vande Bharat sleeper service will begin in January 2026, with the inaugural train running between Guwahati in Assam and Howrah in West Bengal. This route is nearly 1,000 kilometres long and will help passengers travel more quickly between the Northeast and eastern India, especially during busy travel times.
Modern Features of Vande Bharat
Each train will have modern air-conditioned sleeper coaches, likely including different classes like AC first, AC 2-tier, and AC 3-tier, with comfortable berths for overnight travel. The trains will offer a much better experience than older overnight trains, with improved ride comfort, safety features, and modern facilities on board.
Expansion of New Service
Railway officials are planning to expand this new service across several key long-distance corridors, linking major cities and regions efficiently. As the year progresses, more details about specific routes and schedules are expected to be announced. This move marks a big step toward modernising India's railway network and offering passengers a faster, more comfortable way to travel long distances at night.
