The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a new initiative to provide free travel in state roadways buses for women aged 60 years and above, aiming to help senior women travel more easily without worrying about transportation expenses.
Uttar Pradesh Free Bus Travel Scheme for Women
A provision of Rs 100 crore has been made in the First Supplementary Budget for the financial year 2026-27 to compensate the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) for implementing the free bus travel scheme. The move is a part of the Bharatiya Janata Party's promise in its Lok Kalyan Sankalp Patra.
How will the New Scheme Benefit Women?
The government said the initiative will provide financial support to millions of elderly women across Uttar Pradesh. Free bus travel will help senior citizens visit religious places, attend social and family events, and access healthcare facilities more conveniently. The scheme is expected to reduce the financial burden on elderly women, especially those who depend on public transport for their daily needs.
Along with the free travel scheme, the state government has also announced an additional allocation of Rs 1,094.40 crore for the Women Welfare Department. The additional funds will be used to strengthen various welfare programmes focused on women and children.
These include the Destitute Women Pension Scheme, the Mukhyamantri Bal Seva Yojana, and other initiatives aimed at protecting women and children and improving their social security.
The government stated that these financial allocations reflect its focus on ensuring women's safety, dignity and empowerment. The schemes are designed to provide better support to vulnerable sections of society and improve access to essential services.
Officials believe that the free bus travel facility for senior women will encourage greater mobility and independence among elderly citizens. It will also help them participate more actively in social, religious and family activities without depending heavily on others for transportation.
Through these measures, the Uttar Pradesh government aims to strengthen welfare support for women and create better opportunities for their well-being and empowerment.
