In a notable update from the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), a significant step has been taken to make official documentation more inclusive. The traditional binary gender classification system, which previously only allowed individuals to identify as either male or female, has been expanded. Now, a third gender option, 'X', categorized as 'Another Gender Identity', has been introduced, specifically in the form used for naturalization (citizenship) applications.

This change is part of a broader effort by the USCIS to accommodate diverse gender identities. According to a recent official statement, the Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, has been revised to include this new gender option. Additionally, the USCIS Policy Manual has been updated to reflect this significant adjustment. This move aims to ease the application process for individuals whose gender identity does not align with the traditional male or female categories.
Starting from April 1, 2024, applicants will see the 'X' option available on Form N-400. The USCIS also plans to extend this option to other forms in the future. For those with pending applications using the form edition before the specified date, there is an option to update their gender selection to 'X' after April 1, 2024. Importantly, applicants selecting 'X' as their gender do not need to submit any supporting documentation for this choice. The USCIS emphasizes that the gender selected does not need to match other immigration documents or identification documents such as birth certificates, passports, or state IDs.
This decision reflects the USCIS's dedication to providing accurate and respectful identity documentation. It also aligns with similar initiatives by other federal and state agencies, including the US Department of State, which now offers a gender 'X' option in passport applications. The introduction of the 'X' gender option addresses previous challenges faced by individuals and the USCIS alike, due to the lack of gender diversity recognition. This update marks a progressive step towards acknowledging and supporting the varied gender identities present in society.
