The Union Cabinet has approved two new metro corridors under Phase 2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, marking a major step in expanding the city's public transport system. This approval comes after earlier clearances for Lines 2A and 2B and will further improve travel options across important residential and

commercial areas in Pune.
New Corridors of Pune Metro
The newly approved corridors are Line 4 (Kharadi-Hadapsar-Swargate-Khadakwasla) and Line 4A (Nal Stop-Warje-Manik Baug). Together, these lines will cover 31.636 km and include 28 elevated stations. The entire project is expected to be completed within five years at an estimated cost of Rs 9,857.85 crore. The funding will come from the central government, the Maharashtra government, and international agencies.
Pune's Comprehensive Mobility Plan
According to the government's statement, these new routes are part of Pune's Comprehensive Mobility Plan and will connect smoothly with existing and approved metro corridors at Kharadi Bypass, Nal Stop, and Swargate. They will also offer an interchange at Hadapsar Railway Station and may link to future extensions toward Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Road. This will create better connectivity between metro, railway, and bus services.
New Routes of the Corridors
The corridors will run through important city routes like Solapur Road, Magarpatta Road, Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, and the Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway. They will connect key areas such as the Kharadi IT hub, Hadapsar's industrial zone, and the Warje-Khadakwasla region. The expansion is expected to reduce traffic on busy roads and promote safer and eco-friendly travel.
Increased Ridership
Ridership on Lines 4 and 4A is expected to reach 4.09 lakh passengers in 2028, increasing steadily to more than 11.7 lakh by 2058. Execution of the project has been given to Maha-Metro, which has already started early tasks like surveys and detailed design work.
