Indigo, the airline company, has commenced operations at the newly integrated terminal building at Chennai Airport.
This terminal was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the month of April this year. The building, set up with an outlay of Rs 1,260 crore to boost passenger handling capacity, is currently in its first phase.

The Chennai airport earlier informed through a social media post that the airliner will operate all its international flights to various destinations from the new terminal building from Tuesday. And then IndiGo started its international operations from the new Integrated Terminal Building T2 on 13th June. Industry experts expect other airlines to follow suit with this move by IndiGo to resume operations.
The old terminals and the new terminals will operate simultaneously during the initial phases. According to industry experts, with IndiGo resuming operations at the international terminal, other airlines are expected to follow suit.
Once the migration process is finished, the current T-4 terminal will become a Domestic terminal, and the T-3 terminal will be demolished to make way for the next phase of the NITB project. Migration is a carefully planned and executed process carried out in phases to ensure a smooth transition of airport operations from the old terminal to the new one.
NITB has been uniquely designed to showcase the rich culture and heritage of the Tamil state by incorporating Kolams, temples, and other elements highlighting the natural surroundings. The new terminal is spread over 1,36,295 sqm. GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) compliant, with various eco-friendly features including skylights.
With the addition of NITB, the passenger handling capacity of the airport will increase from 23 million passengers per annum (MPPA) to 30 MPPA. The new terminal design is an eye-catching reflection of the local Tamil culture, with kolams, sarees, temples, and other elements that evoke the natural surroundings.

The new terminal has several new facilities coupled with state-of-the-art technology to ease the flow of passengers and safety/security aspects are given top priority. Automated Tray Retrieval System (ATRS-11 Nos.), Self-Baggage Drop (SBD-06 Nos.), Passenger Flow Monitoring System (PFMS), and Boarding Process Control-E Gate will enhance passenger convenience during transit.
New Check-in Counters (100 Nos.), Immigration Counters (108-D+A), Baggage Reclaimer Belt (06 Nos.) Lift (17 Nos.), Escalator (17 Nos.) & Walkalter (06 Nos.) Significantly Enhance Passenger Experience Will increase from The new terminal has a state-of-the-art Baggage Handling System (BHS) which will reduce any incidence of misplaced luggage and will have an efficient baggage tracking system.
