Karnataka's Inter-City Metro Project

If completed, this will become Karnataka's first inter-city Metro project, especially since the Bommasandra-Hosur extension has been progressing very slowly. A feasibility study for the Tumakuru line was submitted in May and later approved under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, even though a state-central joint funding plan had earlier estimated the project cost at around ₹18,670 crore.

The tender includes an earnest money deposit (EMD) of ₹4.5 lakh, and bidders must submit their applications by November 20. After the selection, preparing the DPR is expected to take 4-5 months. Tumakuru has been steadily growing as an important industrial region, and many industry groups, politicians, and officials have been asking for Metro connectivity to support economic development.

Metro Corridor's Elevated Stations

As per the feasibility report, the proposed line may carry 15,000 passengers per hour in one direction. The corridor will have 25 elevated stations, starting from near the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC) in Madavara. It will pass through Neelamangala, Dabaspete, and Kyathasandra before reaching Tumakuru.

How Will Metro Connection Improve Commutation?

Currently, travelling by road to Tumakuru can take up to two hours, depending on traffic. Trains from KSR Bengaluru take less time, but the low frequency is a concern. Metro trains, with a frequency of 4-5 minutes, are expected to solve this issue and offer quicker, more reliable travel. A BMRCL official said that after the bidding phase, the committee must review technical and financial qualifications. Therefore, it may take 5-6 months before the timelines become clearer.
