Did you hear the latest news? Beginning on 1st March 2023, a facial recognition technology can identify worshippers at the well-known Lord Venkateswara temple in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. It is planned that the technology will be made available as a test project.

According to a notice posted on the website of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), a private corporation that manages the temple, the technique is being used to improve transparency in darshan and lodging allotment. It intends to offer more efficient services to the millions of pilgrims who visit the shrine through the use of technology.

The TTD sources claim that there have been several irregularities, including the distribution of laddu prasadam, and sarva darshanam tokens, and in providing accommodation to devotees. The TTD senior authorities are optimistic that facial recognition technology will prevent errors to the greatest possible extent.

According to TTD, facial recognition technology would also be employed at the "Sarva Darshan Complex & caution deposit return booths" to stop worshippers from obtaining more tokens. According to reports, Tirumala has roughly 7,000 lodging options, 1,000 of which are reserved, while the remaining 6,000 are reserved for devotees visiting the temple frequently.

The Tirumala Tirupati temple has a declared net worth of over 2.5 lakh crore, making it the richest Hindu temple in the world. Last week, the TTD board approved an estimated 3,096 crore budget for the fiscal year 2022-2023.

Among its assets are 10.25 tonnes of gold in bank deposits, 2.5 tonnes of pieces of jewelry, around 16,000 crores in bank deposits, and 960 properties spread out across India. The land parcels, buildings, money, & gold deposits made in banks as contributions to the temple by devotees make up the property held by TTD.

What is written exactly on TTD's official website:

  • TTD is set to introduce Facial Recognition Technology on an experimental basis at Vaikuntham 2 and AMS systems from March 1 onwards.
  • The idea is to enhance transparency in tokenless darshan and Accommodation allotment systems providing more effective services to the multitude of visiting pilgrims.
  • This new tech system will be used to prevent a person from procuring more tokens in Sarva Darshan Complex and also at the Caution Deposit refund counters.
