The Himalayan Film Festival 2023: Ladakh is Set to Host Second Edition Promoting Cinema

Lights, Camera, Action: Himalayan Film Festival Returns to Leh

The picturesque backdrop of Leh, Ladakh, is all set to host the second edition of the Himalayan Film Festival (THFF) from September 29 to October 3, 2023. Beyond celebrating cinema, this festival has a broader mission to empower women and promote sustainable tourism in the Himalayan region.

Sankalp: Safe Tourism Campaign Empowering Women

A significant highlight of THFF is the 'Sankalp: Safe Tourism Campaign,' a collaborative effort between the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board, UN Women, Women and Child Development, Urban Development and Housing Department, and the Police Department. This campaign, approved under the 'Nirbhaya Scheme' by the Central Ministry of Women and Child Development, aims to train 10,000 women in various hospitality roles, increasing their direct involvement in the tourism sector.

As part of this initiative, local women will receive training to become boat operators, storytellers, security personnel, drivers, photographers, and self-defense experts. Beyond skill development, the campaign aims to raise awareness about women's safety and rights among both tourists and locals. This ambitious project will launch in 20 clusters across 50 tourist destinations in Madhya Pradesh, including Omkareshwar, Maheshwar, Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, and Kota.

Empowering Ladakhi Filmmakers

THFF also provides a platform for aspiring Ladakhi filmmakers to showcase their work and learn from industry experts. The festival includes a short film competition themed 'The Mountains Are Calling,' a photography workshop led by renowned photographer and filmmaker Achal Mishra, a screenwriters lab mentored by National Award-winning filmmaker Satyanshu Singh, and masterclasses conducted by filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane and actor Janhvi Kapoor.

A Cinematic Journey

The heart of THFF lies in its film screenings, featuring a diverse selection of movies. These films, including Haqeeqat, shot in Ladakh, Spawo (Warrior), Ama (Mother), Jungwa: The Broken Balance, Lunana: A Yak In the Classroom, Por Thozhil, Sunpat, and Lage Raho Munna Bhai, offer a cinematic voyage through various emotions, narratives, and cultures.

Creating Opportunities for Local Filmmakers

Padma Angmo, Commissioner/Secretary, Information, Administration of the Union Territory of Ladakh, expressed delight in returning with the second edition of THFF after its inaugural session in 2021. She emphasized the festival's primary goal is to provide a platform for local Ladakhi filmmakers to exhibit their films, nurture local talent, connect them with experts and markets, and encourage them to utilize Ladakh's potential as a filmmaking destination.

Furthermore, Angmo highlighted their commitment to ensuring the safety and tourist-friendliness of destinations, particularly for women travelers. THFF is not just about showcasing films; it's a holistic celebration of cinema, culture, empowerment, and sustainability in the mesmerizing Himalayan region.
