The Tamil Nadu government is moving ahead with plans to improve Metro rail connectivity by proposing a new Metro link between Hosur in Krishnagiri district and Bommasandra in Karnataka. The proposal aims to strengthen transport links between Tamil Nadu and Bengaluru and is currently being pursued with both the Central and Karnataka governments.
Tamil Nadu's New Hosur-Bommasandra Metro Line
Presenting the State Budget, Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson said that the government is also seeking the Centre's early approval for three new Chennai Metro corridors. These include Chennai Airport to Kilambakkam, Koyambedu to Pattabiram via Avadi, and Poonamallee to Sunguvarchathiram via Sriperumbudur. The state hopes these projects will improve public transport and provide better connectivity to fast-growing suburban areas.
Chennai Metro Phase II
The government also announced that Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail project is progressing rapidly, which covers 118.9 km across three corridors and is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 63,246 crore. According to the government, construction work is moving as planned.
The first section of Chennai Metro Phase II, stretching 14.64 km from Poonamallee Bypass to Porur Junction, is expected to open soon. This stretch will include 11 Metro stations and will connect with the existing Vadapalani Metro station, making travel easier for commuters in western Chennai.
How will the Hosur-Bommasandra Metro Line Benefit Passengers?
The proposed Hosur-Bommasandra Metro line is expected to improve connectivity between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, especially for people travelling daily between Hosur and Bengaluru. At the same time, the planned Chennai Metro corridors aim to expand the city's public transport network and reduce traffic congestion. However, these projects will move forward only after receiving the required approvals from the Central government and, in the case of the Hosur link, the Karnataka government.
