Tamil Nadu has taken a big step towards protecting nature. The state government has announced many new projects to save its wildlife and natural resources. One of the most important announcements is the plan to create a Greater Flamingo Sanctuary in Dhanushkodi. This was revealed by Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu during the Budget 2025-26. The sanctuary will protect the sand dunes, marshes, and mangrove forests in the area. Dhanushkodi, located at the southern tip of Rameswaram Island, is an important stop for migratory birds, especially the Greater Flamingo, which travels along the Central Asian Flyway.
Protecting Marine and Coastal Areas
Along with the flamingo sanctuary, the Tamil Nadu government has decided to create a Marine Resource Foundation. The government has set aside ₹50 crore for this project. The foundation will focus on protecting mangrove forests and promoting sustainable fishing. This will help protect marine life and improve the lives of people who depend on the sea for their livelihood. Tamil Nadu has a long coastline of 1,076 kilometers, and this project will help ensure that marine ecosystems remain healthy for future generations.
Cleaner Public Transport and Better Beaches
The state government is also working to make public transport cleaner. One of the big changes is the conversion of 700 diesel buses to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) will provide ₹70 crore for this project. Switching to CNG will help reduce air pollution and lower the state's carbon footprint.
Tamil Nadu also wants to improve the quality of its beaches. The government plans to get Blue Flag certification for six beaches. This certification is given to beaches that meet international standards for clean water, safety, environmental education, and good management. If Tamil Nadu achieves this, it will boost tourism and ensure that beaches remain beautiful and safe for visitors.
Research and Protection of Birds of Prey
Another important step taken by the government is the creation of the Raptors Research Foundation. The state will provide ₹1 crore from the Endangered Species Conservation Fund for this project. The foundation will study and protect birds of prey like eagles, hawks, and vultures. These birds are in danger because their habitats are being destroyed, and they are exposed to toxic chemicals. The research center will focus on birds living in areas like the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Madurai-Aritapatti, and Pallikaranai. These birds play a key role in maintaining the balance of nature by controlling the population of other animals.
Tamil Nadu's new environmental projects show that the state is serious about protecting nature. By setting up the Greater Flamingo Sanctuary, the Marine Resource Foundation, and the Raptors Research Foundation, the government is working to save its diverse wildlife. At the same time, the focus on cleaner public transport and better beach management shows a commitment to sustainable development. These efforts will not only protect nature but also improve the quality of life for people in the state. Tamil Nadu is setting an example for other states to follow in the fight for a greener and healthier future.
