The alert mainly concerns the Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts, where intense rains could trigger landslides, road blockages due to fallen trees, and other hazards. Other parts of Tamil Nadu are also expected to receive significant rainfall, prompting local authorities to initiate precautionary steps.

Rainfall began late Monday night across several districts and is likely to persist. In response to the adverse weather forecast, the Nilgiris district administration has taken proactive measures. District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Taniyaru announced a holiday for all schools on Tuesday, August 5, as a safety precaution. "With the likelihood of heavy rains and potential risks such as landslides and falling trees, we are prioritizing student safety by declaring a school holiday across the Nilgiris district on 05.08.2025 (Tuesday)," she stated.

Safety Measures and Alerts

As part of precautionary efforts, all tourist destinations in the Nilgiris district will remain closed for one day to ensure the safety of visitors. In a statement, the District Collector said, "All tourist spots will be shut for a day as a safety measure to protect tourists amid the heavy rainfall forecast."

In addition to the red alert for Nilgiris and Coimbatore, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the Theni and Tenkasi districts. To bolster local response, rescue teams from Arakkonam have been dispatched to support emergency efforts in Coimbatore and Nilgiris.

The IMD has further predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall across 13 districts, including Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Vellore, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Kanchipuram, Villupuram, and Kallakurichi, prompting district administrations to stay on high alert.

Emergency Preparedness Measures in Nilgiris Amid Heavy Rainfall

In response to the ongoing heavy rainfall, the Nilgiris district administration has activated multiple emergency support systems to ensure public safety. Residents can contact the District Emergency Control Centre via the toll-free number 1077 or by calling 0423-2450034 / 0423-2450035. For quicker communication, a dedicated WhatsApp number (9488700588) has also been launched, enabling citizens to share updates or file complaints directly.

Emergency control centres have been established at the offices of Revenue Divisional Commissioners and Taluka Commissioners, with personnel available 24/7 to monitor the situation. The district authorities stated, "All information received through these numbers will be acted upon immediately, and the control centres will operate round-the-clock to respond effectively to emergencies."

These measures are aimed at minimizing the impact of severe weather conditions and ensuring a swift response to any crisis, thereby prioritizing the safety and well-being of residents and visitors across the region.
