Now you do have a reason to visit Taiwan. Yes! Following Hong Kong, Taiwan is encouraging foreign tourists with cash and discount incentives. According to a CNN story, the Taiwanese government will provide handouts of up to INR 13,600 to individual tourists under the scheme.
The Taiwanese government would also give 90,000 tour groups allowances of up to INR 54,500 in addition to the freebies for individual travelers. According to Taiwan's Transport Minister Wang Kuo-tsai, Tourists will receive their allowances in a digital format, and they can use them to pay for travel-related items like accommodations and transportation.
The efforts, he continued, are intended to draw more tourists from important markets like Japan, Hong Kong & Macao, South Korea, Southeast Asia, Europe, and America as Taiwan receives major footfall from here.
What is the motive behind launching this scheme or program?
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant negative impact on tourism in Taiwan, so the government there has proposed this new initiative to increase it. In order to promote domestic travel and support the struggling tourism industry, the program will offer monetary incentives to both solo travellers and tour groups.
The tourism bureau for the island territory estimates that tourism contributed close to 4% of Taiwan's GDP prior to the pandemic. It is anticipated that the Taiwanese government will promote and assist the travel and tourism sector.
As the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant negative influence on the tourism industry, thus the program also aims to stimulate the economy and create jobs there. Through incentives, Taiwan hopes to rebuild its pre-pandemic tourism industry. To revive the tourism industry, the government has launched a 12.3 billion dollars stimulus program.
What are the requirements for Indian Passport holders?
1) Indian citizens who wish to visit Taiwan, also referred to as the Republic of China must apply for a visa in beforehand.
2) To apply for a visiting visa, applicants must provide the following:
- Evidence of their intention to stay
- A detailed itinerary
- Return airline tickets
- Hotel reservations
- Financial records or Bank statements, and
- An invitation letter
3) However, Indian citizens who travel in a recognized tourist group are qualified to apply for an e-visa. This mainly applies to people who attend events or activities planned by NGOs or certain government entities in Taiwan.
4) Indian passport holders can also apply for an e-Visa to Taiwan if they have a current permanent residence card or visa from Canada, Australia, South Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Schengen countries, the United States of America, or the United Kingdom.
