Supreme Court  Banned Tiger Safaris In Jim Corbett National Park

The Supreme Court of India criticized Uttarakhand's ex-forest minister for undermining Corbett Tiger Reserve, appointing experts to devise better management strategies.

In a significant judgment, the Supreme Court of India, led by Justice BR Gavai, expressed its astonishment at the actions of Uttarakhand's former forest minister Harak Singh Rawat concerning the Corbett Tiger Reserve. The court criticized Rawat for undermining the legal protections of this critical wildlife habitat, highlighting the disregard for the 'public trust doctrine'. This doctrine, fundamental to environmental law, mandates the responsible stewardship of natural resources for public use.

The apex court's remarks came during a ruling that scrutinizes the former management of the Corbett Tiger Reserve. The judgment outlined that the 2021 state government officials facilitated illegal constructions and extensive deforestation within the reserve, actions that have compromised the sanctuary's integrity. As a corrective measure, the Supreme Court has appointed Ex-Director General of Forests & Special Secretary Chander Prakash Goyal, along with Sumit Sinha, to devise an improved management strategy for the tiger reserve.

A noteworthy aspect of the court's decision is the prohibition of tiger safaris within the core zones of the Jim Corbett National Park, a measure aimed at safeguarding the resident tiger population. Nonetheless, the court has permitted such safaris in the buffer regions of the reserve. This ruling was part of the deliberations over the proposed Pakhro Tiger Safari project within the park.

The controversy surrounding the Corbett Tiger Reserve draws attention to its global significance as a biodiversity hotspot. Home to the Royal Bengal Tiger, the reserve spans 1,288.31 square kilometers and is acclaimed for hosting the highest density of tigers worldwide. The area, which closes to visitors during the monsoon season, welcomes tourists annually from October or November, offering them a glimpse into the rich tapestry of wildlife it harbors.

Harak Singh Rawat, the central figure in this controversy, held the position of forest minister in Uttarakhand's BJP government in 2021. Ahead of the 2022 state Assembly elections, Rawat was expelled from the BJP and subsequently joined the Congress party.

The Supreme Court's intervention in the management of the Corbett Tiger Reserve underscores the critical balance between development and conservation. The judgment signifies a pivotal step towards restoring the sanctity of one of India's most esteemed wildlife sanctuaries, emphasizing the importance of legal and ethical stewardship in preserving natural heritage for future generations.
