In an important development for Kashmir's railway infrastructure, Prime Minister Modi virtually inaugurated the extension of the railway line between Banihal and Sangaldan, covering an additional 48 kilometers. The new line will reduce the overall distance between Baramulla and Sangaldan by 47.23 kilometers, making travel more efficient for passengers. The launch took place at Srinagar Railway Station, where an electric train commenced its journey, marking a significant milestone in Kashmir's connectivity. The new Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) train will serve commuters between Sangaldan and Baramulla stations, providing better access across the valley.

The expansion of the railway line includes the Banihal-Khari-Sumber-Sangaldan section, featuring the innovative Ballast Less Track (BLT) technology. This technology offers a smoother ride experience for passengers and reduces maintenance requirements. The project, costing Rs 15,863 crore, incorporates 16 bridges, including major ones, and one road overbridge along the route. Babe Abid Amin Shah, Assistant General Manager of IRCON, expressed optimism about the project, highlighting its importance in linking Kashmir with the rest of the country via rail.
The railway line boasts over 90% of its length in tunnels, with 11 tunnels covering 43.37 kilometers, including the impressive T-50 tunnel, the longest transportation tunnel in India. Notably, the Khari-Sumber section features a tunnel spanning 12.77 kilometers. The completion of this rail line is a significant step towards realizing the dream of seamless rail travel from Kashmir to Kanyakumari.

Prime Minister Modi also flagged off the inaugural electric train service in the valley, marking the beginning of a new era in Kashmir's railway network. The inauguration ceremony marks a crucial milestone in enhancing connectivity and facilitating easier travel for residents and visitors alike. With the majority of the construction work completed, Kashmir is poised to be fully connected to Jammu via rail within the next few months, further strengthening the region's transportation infrastructure.
The new railway line is not just about connecting cities; it's about connecting people and fostering greater integration between Kashmir and the rest of India. As the train services expand and improve, it opens up opportunities for economic growth, tourism, and cultural exchange. The journey from Banihal to Sangaldan represents more than just a physical connection; it symbolizes progress, unity, and development for the entire region.
