In a bid to adapt to the evolving landscape of remote work and extended vacations, South Korea has introduced a pioneering visa specifically tailored for foreign nationals engaged in the popular 'workation' trend. This initiative, set to launch on January 1, 2024, allows individuals to stay in the country for up to two years while continuing employment in their home country.
Exploring the 'Workation' Visa
The Justice Ministry of South Korea has recognized the surge in the 'workation' phenomenon, where individuals seamlessly blend work and vacation while exploring various locations. The new 'workation' visa aims to tap into this global trend by enabling foreign residents to stay for an initial one-year period, with the flexibility to extend for an additional year.
Presently, foreign nationals keen on working and traveling in Korea are required to obtain a tourist visa, limiting their stay to less than 90 days. The upcoming 'workation' visa seeks to enhance this experience by providing a prolonged stay, aligning with the changing dynamics of work.
Digital Nomad Visa Application Process
As part of the application process, interested individuals must submit necessary documentation, including proof of an annual income exceeding 84.96 million won, double South Korea's gross national income per capita as of 2022. The application also requires employment verification and a criminal record check. Additionally, applicants are mandated to have private health insurance with coverage of at least 100 million won to ensure their preparedness for emergencies.
To be eligible, applicants should be 18 years or older and possess a minimum of one year of experience in their current field. Successful digital nomad visa holders have the option to bring their spouses and children along for the adventure. Importantly, those already in South Korea on short-term tourist visas like B-1, B-2, or C-3 can seamlessly transition to the new digital nomad visa.
It's imperative to note that while this visa offers an extended stay and flexibility, it does not grant digital nomads the ability to seek employment within South Korea. The emphasis remains on providing a conducive environment for remote work and vacationing.
