The Vande Bharat Express is set to revolutionize travel in Sikkim, marking a monumental change after 50 years. The introduction of this high-speed train service not only reconnects Sikkim to the Indian railway network but also significantly enhances connectivity for the entire Northeast region.
Last year, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced plans to introduce the Vande Bharat Express in Sikkim by December 2024. During his visit to the region, he inspected the progress of the Sevoke-Rangpo railway project, expressing satisfaction with the ongoing work. The project involves constructing 14 tunnels and 17 bridges along the route, with a focus on enhancing connectivity to strategic locations like Nathu-la, a pass on the India-China frontier.
Sikkim's geographical significance has made it a priority to improve connectivity, similar to efforts in Arunachal Pradesh and Ladakh. Beyond railways, the region is also set to receive 5G cellphone services by August this year, aiming to enhance communication infrastructure across remote areas.
The railway project in Sikkim encompasses about 80 percent of its route passing through tunnels, showcasing a visionary approach to transportation infrastructure. The underground railway station in Rangpo is a testament to this vision, designed to seamlessly integrate with the unique topography of Sikkim while prioritizing passenger comfort and safety.
Aside from transportation benefits, the project holds immense potential for boosting tourism in Sikkim. With improved accessibility through railways, travelers will find it easier to explore the state's natural beauty and cultural heritage. Previously, reaching Sikkim required a long road trip from New Jalpaiguri or Siliguri in West Bengal. However, the introduction of the railway promises to significantly reduce travel time and enhance the overall tourism experience.
If the reports are to be believed, the Sikkim Vande Bharat will take you to Guwahati in less than 5 hours, which would prove to be a game-changer for the people there. Currently, the Vande Bharat Express 22227 travels from New Jalpaiguri station to Guwahati. It usually takes about 5 hours and 30 minutes because it stops at seven places along the way. This train runs six days a week, but not on Tuesdays.
The railway project in Sikkim is structured in three phases, with the first phase covering the distance between Siliguri and Rangpo. Subsequent phases will extend the network to Gangtok and Nathula, further enhancing connectivity within the region. The construction involves innovative methods like the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) to ensure efficiency and safety.
