Sikkim, a beautiful destination in the Himalayas, is taking an important step to improve tourism facilities. Starting from March 2025, tourists visiting the state will need to pay an entry fee of Rs. 50 per person. This decision, introduced under the Sikkim Registration of Tourist Trade Rules, 2025, aims to collect funds for the Tourism Sustainability Development (TSD) Fund. The collected money will be used to improve tourism infrastructure, roads, and cleanliness, ensuring a better experience for visitors.

Who Needs to Pay the Entry Fee?
The new rule applies to all tourists above the age of five. However, visitors on official government business are exempt from paying the fee. Tourists will receive a one-month entry pass after paying the fee. If a visitor leaves Sikkim and returns within the same month, they will need to pay the fee again. But if they continue staying in Sikkim beyond one month without exiting, they won't have to pay again during hotel check-ins.
How Will the Fee Be Collected?
The Tourism and Civil Aviation Department has ensured that the process is simple and smooth. Hotels in Sikkim will collect the entry fee when tourists check in. The collected money will then be deposited into the TSD Fund, which will be used to develop tourism infrastructure and maintain Sikkim's natural beauty.
Why Is Sikkim Introducing This Fee?
C.S. Rao, the principal secretary of the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, explained that the funds will be used to:
- Improve road connectivity for better travel within Sikkim.
- Strengthen cleanliness and waste management efforts.
- Enhance tourism services and facilities for a better experience.
By introducing this fee, Sikkim is taking a step towards sustainable tourism. The state aims to balance increasing tourist numbers with the need to protect its environment and cultural heritage.
A Look at Sikkim's Tourism History
Sikkim, once a separate kingdom, became part of India in 1975 after a referendum. Indian tourists were first allowed to visit in the early 1990s, after efforts by former Chief Minister Nar Bahadur Bhandari. His advocacy with the central government helped open the state to travelers. Now, the new tourist entry fee continues the tradition of welcoming visitors while ensuring the sustainable growth of tourism.
The introduction of the Rs. 50 entry fee for tourists in Sikkim is a significant step towards sustainable tourism management. By directing the funds towards infrastructure improvements and environmental conservation, the government is ensuring that visitors enjoy a better experience while preserving the natural beauty of Sikkim. This move reflects Sikkim's commitment to responsible tourism, making it an even more attractive destination for travelers in the future.
