In a revelation that has sent shockwaves across India, data received from Police Departments of States/Union Territories has unveiled a startling increase in the number of fatal accidents on National Highways, including National Expressways, from 2019 to 2022. The statistics presented in Lok Sabha during the Budget Session point towards an alarming trend, with fatalities rising from 51,036 in 2019 to an unprecedented 55,571 in 2022.
This surge in road mishaps not only underscores the critical state of road safety in the country but also highlights the urgent need for both governmental intervention and public awareness to curb this escalating crisis.
Government's Endeavors to Enhance Road Safety
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Indian government, through the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, has initiated several measures aimed at preventing road accidents and ensuring the safety of drivers on National Expressways. Among these interventions is the development of Wayside Amenities - designated rest areas providing essential services for drivers to rest and refresh.
Additionally, the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) has been installed on high traffic density routes such as the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Trans-Haryana, and the Eastern Peripheral Expressway. This state-of-the-art system is designed to optimize traffic flow and enhance safety through real-time monitoring and management.
Proactive Measures to Mitigate Road Mishaps
Further reinforcing the commitment to road safety, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken proactive steps, including the provision of clear and informative signages on National Expressways. These signages play a vital role in guiding drivers, providing crucial information for safe navigation, and minimizing the risks associated with frequent lane changes.
In a bid to ensure the expressways remain free from obstacles, Route Patrolling Vehicles (RPV) and Highway Surveillance Vehicles (HSV) are deployed to remove illegally parked vehicles along the expressways. Moreover, a toll-free Helpline No. 1033 is operational 24*7, offering assistance to National Expressways' users in times of need.
