Red Alert Issued in Nilgiris: Record Rainfall Shuts Down Tourism, Tourist Entry Banned

The arrival of the Southwest Monsoon has brought unusually heavy rainfall to the Nilgiris district in Tamil Nadu, forcing a temporary stop to all tourist activities. With record-breaking rainfall levels and safety concerns rising, the district is now facing both travel disruptions and environmental challenges.

Red Alert Issued in Nilgiris

Tourist Spots Closed After Record Rainfall

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Avalanche received 35 cm of rain and Upper Bhavani got 30 cm in just 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Monday. Due to these extreme weather conditions, the Nilgiris district administration decided to close all popular tourist spots in Ooty, Coonoor, and Kothagiri as a precaution. Many tourists were left stranded or had to cancel or change their holiday plans.

Rain Causes Damage and Travel Problems

The heavy rainfall has led to the uprooting of 43 trees, damage to four houses, and small landslides in several interior locations. These disruptions have created problems for both locals and travelers. With more rain expected until at least May 28, including extremely heavy showers in hilly areas, the situation continues to be serious.

Red Alert in Nilgiris and Ghat Areas

A red alert has been announced for the Nilgiris district and ghat regions of Coimbatore, meaning extremely heavy rainfall is likely. An orange alert has also been issued for the districts of Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli (ghat areas), and Kanyakumari. This shows that the effect of the monsoon is being felt in many parts of southern Tamil Nadu.

Weather Experts Warn of More Rain

Independent weather blogger K Srikanth said that the monsoon surge over Peninsular India remains strong and is bringing heavy rainfall along the Western Ghats. He also warned that Nilgiris might continue to see more extreme rain in the coming days. These observations show how intense this monsoon season has become.

Environmental Concerns and Climate Change

Environmentalists are raising concerns about the growing number of extreme weather events in the Nilgiris. This region is known for its rich and sensitive ecosystem. Experts believe that the recent weather is a result of climate change and warn that these events might become more common in the future.

As the people of Nilgiris deal with the heavy rainfall and its effects, the focus remains on keeping everyone safe and reducing damage. This situation highlights the urgent need for better planning, environmental protection, and awareness about climate change to protect such important natural areas.
