After several days of heatwave conditions and high humidity, the southwest monsoon finally reached Delhi on Thursday, five days later than its usual arrival date. Light rain was reported in many parts of the city during the morning, while cloudy skies and cooler temperatures provided much-needed relief from the hot weather.

Rain Alert in Delhi on 5 July
According to weather experts, Delhi is likely to experience more widespread monsoon rainfall by July 5 as the seasonal monsoon trough shifts northwards once again and is expected to bring another spell of rain to Delhi and several parts of northwest India.
Delhi Yellow Alert on Friday
The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Friday. The weather department has forecast a generally cloudy sky with moderate rainfall. The minimum temperature is expected to remain around 22 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature is likely to be about 32 degrees Celsius. This is also the first time since 2021 that the monsoon has arrived in Delhi in July. In 2021, the monsoon reached the capital on July 13.
Delhi Weather Records
At Delhi's main weather station in Safdarjung, the maximum temperature was recorded at 33 degrees Celsius on Thursday, which was 4.4 degrees below normal. The minimum temperature settled at 22.8 degrees Celsius, 5.1 degrees below the seasonal average. This was also Delhi's lowest minimum temperature since July 21, 2021, when it had dropped to 22.4 degrees Celsius.
Other weather stations also recorded below-normal temperatures. Palam recorded a maximum temperature of 33 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 21.2 degrees Celsius. Lodi Road reported a maximum of 33 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 23.6 degrees Celsius. The Ridge station recorded 33.8 degrees Celsius as the maximum and 21 degrees Celsius as the minimum, while Ayanagar recorded 32.4 degrees Celsius and 22.6 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Rainfall during the morning was light across the city. Safdarjung received 4.6 mm of rain, Palam recorded 1.9 mm, Ayanagar received 5 mm, Lodi Road recorded 4.1 mm, and Ridge received 3 mm. Most stations reported little or no rainfall during the rest of the day.
The arrival of the monsoon followed a hotter-than-normal pre-monsoon season in Delhi. The city experienced unusually warm nights, frequent hot days, short but intense heatwave spells, early pre-monsoon showers, and a delayed monsoon onset. The average minimum temperature during the March to June pre-monsoon period reached 22.9 degrees Celsius, making it the warmest pre-monsoon night recorded since 2022.
