Pune Metro is preparing to expand its reach with the Phase II project, which follows the near completion of Phase I. The current metro lines from Vanaz to Ramwadi and PCMC to Swargate are almost fully operational. One important part of Phase I, the Khadki Metro Station, is also close to being completed. With all this progress, the authorities are now focusing on the next stage to make the metro network even better for the people of Pune.

Approval for Phase II Development
In October 2024, the Maharashtra Government approved the Detailed Progress Report (DPR) for Phase II. This plan includes extending the metro from Vanaz to Chandni Chowk and from Ramwadi to Wagholi. These extensions are still waiting for the final approval from the Central Government. There are also plans to build a 25.8 km metro line from Khadakwasla to Kharadi. This route will go through Swargate and Hadapsar and include 22 stations. The estimated cost for this line is about INR 8,131 Crore. Another new line will run from Nal Stop to Manik Baug via Warje. This 6 km line will have six stations and is expected to cost around INR 1,765 Crore.
Planning and Designing the New Stations
To make sure the new phase is completed smoothly, the authorities have started early preparations. These include designing new stations. Out of the 22 stations on the Khadakwasla-Kharadi line, 14 will be elevated, and their designs are already in progress. The designs focus on good looks, smart use of space, and meeting modern needs. They also include detailed technical drawings and planning for connections between different parts of the station.
An important part of the station design is sustainability. All stations will follow guidelines to use solar energy and aim for top ratings from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). The Executive Director of Pune Metro explained that early planning will help save time and reduce work at the construction site later.
Improving Revenue and Future Connections
Pune Metro also wants to improve its non-fare income. For this, the authorities plan to develop the space at metro stations, possibly by adding extra floors. This will help use the space better and make the project more financially strong.
Meanwhile, Pune Metro is also working on preparing DPRs for new connections. These include lines from Kharadi to Pune Airport and a spur line from Kondhwa. This shows that Pune Metro has a big plan to make the city better connected.
Pune Metro's Phase II is moving ahead with careful planning, smart design, and a strong focus on green and modern transport for the city's future.
