The Pune-Bengaluru Expressway is a planned 700 km long, 8-lane, Greenfield access-controlled expressway that will connect Pune in Maharashtra with Bengaluru in Karnataka. This ambitious project is set to revolutionize travel between these two major cities.
Purpose and Significance
The expressway is part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana, a national highway development program in India. The main aim is to improve connectivity between Pune, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. Route and Districts Covered
The expressway will pass through 12 districts: three in Maharashtra and nine in Karnataka.
- In Maharashtra, it starts in Kanjle on the proposed Pune ring road, crossing through Pune, Satara, and Sangli districts.
- In Karnataka, it will go through Belagavi, Bagalkot, Gadag, Koppal, Vijayanagara, Davanagere, Chitradurga, Tumakuru, and Bengaluru Rural districts.
- The expressway will end at the proposed Satellite Ring Road in the Bengaluru Metropolitan Region.
Distance Reduction
The Pune-Bengaluru Expressway will reduce the distance between the two cities by about 95 km. Currently, the drive from Bengaluru to Pune takes around 15 to 19 hours. Once the expressway is completed, it is estimated to take only 7 hours. This significant reduction in travel time will make commuting much more convenient and efficient.
Timeline and Cost
The project is targeted to be completed by 2028. The estimated cost of the project is around ₹50,000 crore. This greenfield expressway will run parallel to National Highway 48 and will serve as an alternative and faster route to NH-48. The expressway will initially have 6 lanes, which will later be expanded to 8 lanes, allowing vehicles to travel at speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour.
Bharatmala Program
The Bharatmala program aims to improve existing roads, upgrade basic facilities, and modernize and enhance their quality. As part of this project, the Pune-Bengaluru Expressway is being developed. In its second phase, this expressway will connect Pune, known as the "Oxford of the East," with Bengaluru, often referred to as the "Silicon Valley of India." The goal is to create a high-speed corridor that significantly reduces travel time.
Detailed Plan
The expressway will have a maximum length of 700 kilometers. It will be an access-controlled greenfield expressway, allowing vehicles to travel at high speeds. The expressway will also have 22 interchanges with other roads and networks, including 2 emergency airstrips. It is designed to withstand heavy rainfall, ensuring safety and reliability in all weather conditions.
Progress and Future Prospects
So far, 72 kilometers out of the total 699 kilometers of the project have been completed. The National Highway Authority of India is overseeing the construction. Once the expressway is fully operational, the journey from Bengaluru to Pune will take only 7-8 hours. The expressway will also connect Mumbai and Pune, reducing travel time significantly.
The project received approval in 2019 from Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways. The completion of the entire expressway is anticipated by 2028. This new expressway will not only improve connectivity but also promote economic development in the region.
