Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently made a strong pitch for promoting domestic tourism by endorsing the 'Wed in India' campaign. Speaking at a massive rally in Srinagar, the first since the abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status in 2019, Modi urged Indian citizens and non-resident Indians alike to consider India, particularly Kashmir, for wedding destinations and family visits. This effort is aimed at boosting the local economy and supporting tourism in the area.
During his speech at Bakshi Stadium, Modi stressed the importance of visitors to Jammu and Kashmir spending a portion of their budget on local shopping to generate job opportunities. "You cannot come, see and go back. You should spend five to ten percent on shopping. I have also purchased from here," Modi stated, highlighting his personal commitment to the cause.

The Prime Minister's advocacy for 'Wed in India' is a part of a broader vision to enhance the economic and social development of Jammu and Kashmir, which he described as the crown jewel of India. Modi's call for a developed Jammu and Kashmir as a priority underscores the region's significance in the nation's progress. He also inaugurated tourism projects worth over Rs 1,400 crore, including the 'Integrated Development of Hazratbal Shrine' in Srinagar, under the 'Swadesh Darshan' and 'PRASHAD' schemes.
Furthermore, Modi launched the 'Dekho Apna Desh People's Choice Tourist Destination Poll' and the 'Chalo India Global Diaspora Campaign'. These initiatives aim to identify and develop 40 locations as tourist hotspots over the next two years, based on public opinion through an online poll. The destinations receiving the highest votes will be prioritized for development.
Through these efforts, the Prime Minister expressed confidence in the enhancement of the tourism industry in Jammu and Kashmir, creating new job opportunities and contributing to the region's overall growth. The 'Wed in India' campaign, along with other tourism-related initiatives, seeks to attract more visitors to the country and encourage spending that supports local economies.
