India is all set to launch its first Vande Bharat sleeper train in January 2026, offering a more comfortable and modern way to travel long distances by overnight train. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that this new service will run between Guwahati in Assam and Kolkata, Howrah, in West Bengal,

and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to flag off the first run in the second half of the month.
How is it Different from Others?
This train is different from earlier Vande Bharat trains because it is designed for overnight travel, so that passengers can sleep in air-conditioned sleeper coaches instead of sitting in day-seating cars. It has 16 coaches, including 11 three-tier AC, 4 two-tier AC, and 1 first-class AC coach, allowing around 823 people to travel comfortably.
High Speed Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains
The Vande Bharat sleeper is built to be faster and more modern than regular trains. During trial runs, it reached up to 180 km/h, though its regular speed may be lower on long routes with stops. The design includes comfortable berths, better suspension for a smooth ride, automatic doors, and modern toilets. Safety is also improved with the KAVACH anti-collision system and other advanced features.
Affordable Ticket Prices
Ticket prices are expected to be more affordable than air travel between Guwahati and Kolkata, with AC 3-tier fares around ₹2,300, AC 2-tier around ₹3,000, and First Class about ₹3,600 (including meals), making it a good option for many travellers.
How Will it Benefit Commuters?
Officials say this sleeper version of Vande Bharat will boost overnight rail travel, especially for people who want better comfort and speed than traditional mail and express trains. It marks a big step in modernising long-distance train journeys in India, offering passengers a premium yet practical travel choice between major eastern cities.
