PBKS vs MI IPL 2026: Rain Threat Looms Over Crucial Dharamsala Clash

The much-awaited IPL 2026 clash between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians is set to take place on Thursday, May 14, at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala. However, weather conditions are likely to play a major role in determining how the contest unfolds.

The match, scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM IST, comes with growing concerns over rain interruptions, as forecasts indicate unstable conditions across the Kangra Valley region.

Strong Chance of Rain During Match Hours

Weather reports suggest a 55 to 60 per cent probability of rainfall during the evening hours in Dharamsala. Light showers and cloudy conditions have already been reported in nearby areas, while the regional meteorological department has issued a yellow alert for parts of the Kangra Valley.

Unlike the extreme summer heat affecting several IPL venues across India, Dharamsala is expected to remain comparatively cooler because of its high-altitude location. Evening temperatures are likely to stay between 15°C and 20°C, accompanied by moderate mountain winds and increased cloud cover.

If rain intensifies during the evening, there is a possibility of delayed starts, reduced overs or even a complete washout. Under IPL playing conditions, a minimum of five overs per side must be completed for a result to be declared.

Dharamsala Pitch Expected to Favour Batters

The HPCA Stadium pitch has developed a reputation for producing high-scoring contests in recent IPL seasons. The altitude and thinner mountain air allow the ball to travel further, making the venue particularly favourable for aggressive stroke play and power-hitting.

Recent matches at the venue have seen totals crossing the 200-run mark regularly. The average first-innings score at the stadium is believed to be around 180, though teams batting well have managed significantly bigger totals.

At the same time, fast bowlers are expected to receive early assistance because of the cool conditions and possible moisture in the surface. Seam movement and extra bounce could make the opening overs crucial for both sides.

Reports from previous fixtures at the venue also indicate that the pitch tends to slow down slightly as the match progresses. Because of this, captains winning the toss may prefer batting first, especially if rain interruptions remain a possibility later in the evening.

Pacers Likely to Dominate

The conditions are expected to suit pace bowlers more than spinners. Recent matches at Dharamsala have shown noticeable seam movement, while uneven bounce has occasionally troubled batters.

Bowlers such as Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh could become key figures in the powerplay overs if cloud cover remains throughout the evening.

Meanwhile, dew is unlikely to become a major factor because of the cooler weather conditions in the hill region.

Areas Likely to Be Affected by Weather Conditions

The rain activity and cloudy conditions are expected across:

  • Dharamsala
  • Kangra Valley
  • Nearby HPCA Stadium regions
  • Parts of Himachal Pradesh's upper hill districts

Officials and ground staff are expected to closely monitor weather movement throughout the day.

Match Situation Gains Importance

The weather forecast adds another layer of uncertainty to an already important fixture. A shortened match could significantly alter team strategies, with aggressive batting expected from the start if overs are reduced.

A complete washout would result in both teams sharing points, making the weather one of the biggest talking points ahead of the PBKS vs MI encounter in Dharamsala.
