Bhutan from Assam, India by Train
India and Bhutan are taking a significant step towards enhancing their bilateral relations with a groundbreaking railway project. This initiative, fully funded by the Indian government, aims to construct a 57.5-kilometer railway line connecting Kokrajhar in Assam, India, to Gelephu in Sarpang, Bhutan. The project, estimated at INR 10 billion, is set to be completed by 2026.

The railway project is a testament to India's commitment to support Bhutan's socio-economic development and bolster regional integration. Furthermore, it is expected to foster trade, tourism, and people-to-people interactions between the two nations. Passengers will traverse scenic landscapes, forests, and rivers, providing a unique travel experience.
The Project's Genesis:
In 2021, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved this transformative project. The official launch took place on September 9, 2023, in a virtual ceremony, featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bhutanese counterpart, Lotay Tshering. Both leaders expressed their satisfaction with the project's progress, emphasizing its potential to strengthen the friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
India's Commitment to Bhutan:
This railway project is just one of India's numerous initiatives aimed at assisting Bhutan in infrastructure development. India is actively involved in constructing hydropower projects, road networks, bridges, airports, and digital connectivity in Bhutan. India stands as Bhutan's largest trading partner and development ally, providing annual assistance exceeding INR 50 billion.
Other Projects Supported by India:
- Road Networks: India has significantly contributed to Bhutan's road infrastructure, constructing over 1,500 km of roads, including major highways and bridges. Road safety and efficiency have also been improved with the construction of tunnels and bypasses.
- Airports: India has played a crucial role in Bhutan's civil aviation sector by providing technical and financial assistance for the construction and enhancement of airports, including the Paro International Airport and domestic airports like Bumthang and Gelephu.
- Digital Connectivity: Bhutan has benefited from India's satellite services for communication and broadcasting, with India providing satellite transponders for Bhutan's national television channel and disaster management network. A ground earth station in Thimphu receives satellite signals.
- Kisan Rail: India introduced the Kisan Rail, a specialized train service facilitating the export of agricultural products from Bhutan to India. This service connects Phuentsholing in Bhutan to Siliguri in West Bengal, supporting the income of farmers and traders.
