To improve safety for millions of commuters, the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway is set to undergo vital upgrades. This 45 km-long expressway connects Delhi with Noida, Greater Noida, and Agra, serving over 10 lakh vehicles daily. It is a critical link to key locations, including the Noida International Airport. Recent studies have highlighted safety gaps, prompting the Noida Authority to implement enhancements that meet Indian Road Congress (IRC) standards.

Findings from the Survey
A comprehensive survey by the Regional Centre for Urban and Environmental Studies revealed significant safety shortcomings along the expressway. Covering the stretch from Sector-14 at Gautam Buddh Nagar Gate to Sector-150 Noida, the study identified the lack of:
- Proper lane separators
- Bollards and reflectors
- Adequate signage and kilometer markers
The current situation poses safety risks, especially during night hours. The absence of clear lane markings and necessary road features increases the likelihood of accidents. Additionally, infrastructure components such as advertisement poles, ITMS poles, and foot over bridges (FOBs) lack proper signage, complicating navigation for commuters.
Steps for Improvement
In response, the Noida Authority, under its CEO's guidance, has outlined a multi-step plan:
1. Detailed Assessment: The findings will be presented in a report to determine the required budget.
2. Expert Review: IIT Delhi will evaluate the proposed upgrades to ensure they meet safety standards.
3. Tendering Process: Once approved, tenders will be issued to initiate work.
The project aims to complete these safety upgrades within six months, improving the expressway's usability and security.
Enhanced Surveillance for Commuter Safety
To strengthen monitoring, the City Surveillance System uses cameras on ITMS poles within crash barriers. While effective, the survey emphasized the need for additional improvements. The Noida Authority will collaborate with the Greater Noida Authority to ensure seamless security across the entire stretch.
Why These Upgrades Matter
The expressway has a history of accidents caused by inadequate safety measures. By addressing these issues, the Noida Authority seeks to enhance commuter safety and maintain the expressway's role as a strategic transportation link between urban and rural regions.
The Noida-Greater Noida Expressway is on the verge of a significant transformation. With detailed plans and expert reviews, the upcoming enhancements promise safer and smoother journeys for its vast number of users. These upgrades mark a major step forward in making the expressway a model of modern infrastructure and road safety.
