Indian Railways has made it easier for passengers to travel by removing a key restriction on purchasing unreserved tickets (UTS) through an app. According to a report by Times of India, passengers can now buy unreserved and platform tickets from anywhere using their smartphones and an internet connection.

Before this change, there was a limit on booking tickets within a 50 km radius from the outer border. But now, passengers can book unreserved tickets from any location, enhancing convenience for railway travelers.
This move is particularly beneficial for cities like Mumbai, where millions rely on local trains for their daily commute. Previously, passengers could only buy paperless tickets within a 20 km radius for suburban trains and a 50 km radius for non-suburban trains. With the new flexibility, online ticket booking is expected to increase, reducing long queues at ticket counters.
However, the rules regarding ticket purchases near railway station property remain unchanged. Currently, around 25 percent of commuters use the UTS app for online ticket purchases.
Earlier reports indicated that Indian Railways is preparing to launch a comprehensive 'super app' aimed at revolutionizing the railway commuting experience. This app will offer various services, including ticket booking and train tracking, to enhance customer experience. Scheduled for release before the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, the 'super app' represents a significant technological advancement.
Another recent update by Indian Railways is the introduction of a 24-hour ticket refund scheme, simplifying the cancellation process for passengers.
The IRCTC Rail Connect app is currently the most popular railway app, with over 100 million downloads. The upcoming 'super app' will integrate existing apps like Rail Madad, UTS, Satark, TMS-Nirikshan, IRCTC Air, and PortRead. Additionally, the 'Metro Ride Kolkata' app for Kolkata Metro users has gained popularity, allowing users to recharge smart cards and book QR code-based tickets.
Promotional films demonstrating app download and usage are being shown on platform televisions at various Metro stations to increase awareness. Construction for the underground Victoria station is also underway as part of the Joka-Esplanade Metro Corridor.
The impending launch of the Indian Railways' 'super app' promises a new era of convenience and efficiency for railway commuters nationwide. With seamless ticketing and real-time tracking, this digital platform will transform rail travel for the better. Stay tuned for updates as Indian Railways continues its journey towards technological innovation and enhanced passenger experience.
