Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, shared exciting news on social media about a major highway development project in Tamil Nadu. The government has approved ₹1,338 crore for an access-controlled highway project on NH-40. This project spans 28 kilometers from Walajapet/Ranipet to the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border and promises to improve regional connectivity and boost economic activities.

Key Features of the Project
The upcoming highway will include a 4-lane main carriageway with paved shoulders and 2-lane service roads on both sides. A 10-kilometer bypass will be constructed for Walajapet/Ranipet to ease traffic congestion in these towns. Additionally, the project includes the construction of 4 major bridges and 2 railway over-bridges, enhancing the safety and efficiency of travel in the area.
Enhanced Connectivity
This access-controlled corridor is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Chennai and other major cities such as Bengaluru, Tirupati, and Vellore. Vellore, home to the prestigious Christian Medical College (CMC), will greatly benefit from this improved network, making it easier for patients and visitors to travel to the hospital.
Economic Growth Potential
The highway will also play a vital role in stimulating local industries. Walajapet and Ranipet are known for their thriving leather industry and small-scale engineering units that supply components to major establishments like BHEL (Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited). By improving road infrastructure, the project is set to boost these industries and attract new investments.
Moreover, the region is gearing up for the completion of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Ranipet by 2025. This highway will provide crucial connectivity to the SEZ, fostering economic growth and creating job opportunities for locals.
Local Benefits
The inclusion of 2-lane service roads ensures smooth traffic flow for local commuters while the main carriageway caters to long-distance travelers. This thoughtful design will address both regional and local transportation needs effectively.
The ₹1,338 crore highway project is a landmark initiative that not only promises to enhance connectivity but also drive economic growth in Tamil Nadu. With improved access to key cities, better support for industries, and efficient infrastructure, the highway is expected to bring lasting benefits to the region.
As this project moves forward, it highlights the government's commitment to developing modern roadways that cater to both economic and social needs.
