The Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the construction of a new high-speed corridor between Shillong and Silchar. This major project aims to improve road connectivity in the North-Eastern part of India. The corridor will stretch for 166.80 kilometers, starting from Mawlyngkhung near Shillong in Meghalaya to Panchgram near Silchar in Assam. It will be built under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM).

The main goal of this project is to reduce travel time and distance between the mainland of India and important regions like Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, and the Barak Valley of Assam. It will also make the journey from Guwahati to Silchar much smoother and faster.
Cost and route details
Union Minister Ashiwini Vaishnaw shared the news about the Cabinet's approval. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 22,864 crore. The corridor will mostly pass through Meghalaya, covering 144.80 km, while 22 km will fall in Assam. The planned route will connect with major national highways such as NH-27, NH-106, NH-206, and NH-37.
This smart alignment will help people travel easily to cities like Guwahati, Shillong, and Silchar. It will also connect important towns and areas such as Diengpasoh, Ummulong, Phramer, Khlieriat, Ratachera, Umkiang, and Kalain.
Boost to regional economy and tourism
The project is expected to bring big changes to the economy of the North-East. It will help industries grow in Meghalaya and nearby states by improving transport facilities. It will also make tourist places in the North-East more accessible, giving a boost to tourism in the region.
This road will be very useful for people travelling from Guwahati to Silchar and further to other parts of the North-East like Imphal, Aizawl, and Agartala. The easy road access will help in better transportation of goods and will support the region's logistic system.
Support for self-reliant India
This new high-speed road project is also part of the government's larger goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat or Self-Reliant India. It focuses on improving infrastructure, creating job opportunities, and supporting growth in North-Eastern states like Meghalaya, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
This corridor is set to become an important part of India's infrastructure. It will bring the North-East closer to the rest of the country and help in the region's all-round development.
