The Kharagpur-Visakhapatnam Expressway is set to transform transportation and economic growth between West Bengal, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh. Spanning 783 kilometers, this greenfield expressway is part of the Central government's Gati Shakti Framework, which focuses on revolutionizing infrastructure across India.

Details of the Project
- Route and Reach: The expressway will connect Kharagpur in West Bengal to Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, passing through important locations in Odisha such as Chandikhol, Cuttack, Khorda, Tangi, and Brahmapur.
- Travel Time: It is expected to reduce the journey time between Kharagpur and Visakhapatnam from 14 hours to just 8 hours.
- Economic Benefits: This expressway will act as a major logistics corridor, boosting trade and development in underdeveloped areas along its route.
Progress and Development
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has already initiated preparations for the project. Technical bids for Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) were opened in November 2024, receiving a total of 18 bids-10 for Package 1 and 8 for Package 2. These bids are currently under evaluation, with the financial bids set to follow.
If contracts are awarded by mid-2025, the DPRs are expected to be finalized by the end of 2026. Construction is likely to begin in 2028 after securing all necessary approvals, land acquisitions, and clearances.
Importance of the Project
According to BJP leader Prithviraj Harichandan, the expressway will pass through less-developed regions, reducing land acquisition costs while creating opportunities for regional development. He described the project as transformative for Odisha's road network and emphasized its role in facilitating smoother travel and trade.
The expressway's design as an access-controlled, high-speed corridor will benefit both passenger and freight transportation, making it a vital link between significant economic hubs. It aligns with the Gati Shakti Framework's vision to enhance infrastructure and promote economic growth through coordinated planning.
The meticulous planning and groundwork reflect the importance of the project. With construction expected to start in 2028, the expressway will mark a significant milestone in infrastructure development. Once completed, it will not only enhance connectivity between states but also stimulate economic activity, benefiting millions of people in the region.
The Kharagpur-Visakhapatnam Expressway is more than just a road-it is a gateway to growth and connectivity for India's eastern corridor. Its completion will signify progress, providing a faster, more efficient route for commuters and businesses while fostering development across West Bengal, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh.
