The Maharashtra Cabinet's Infrastructure Committee has approved the proposed extension of Nagpur Metro Phase-2 from the Kanhan River station to Kanhan town. The decision, taken on Thursday after more than a year of planning and several rounds of approvals, will allow the city's metro network to cross the Kanhan River

and reach the fast-growing suburban area. The meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The committee approved the 1.40-km elevated extension, which is expected to cost ₹310.35 crore.
Nagpur Metro Phase II
MahaMetro will work on the project after it receives final approval from the Central government. As part of the extension, one new elevated metro station will be built at Kanhan. This will increase the number of stations on the Kamptee corridor from 12 to 13. Metro officials said the project will require the construction of a nearly 500-metre steel viaduct across the Kanhan River. At present, the metro line ends at Kanhan River station. The new bridge will allow trains to continue into Kanhan town.
The proposal was first raised more than a year ago by Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule and later supported by Minister of State Ashish Jaiswal. Jaiswal also requested MahaMetro to study the possibility of extending the line further from Kanhan to Tekdi Fata before the state government approved the project.
However, MahaMetro clarified that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) currently covers only the extension up to Kanhan. Any further expansion beyond Kanhan will be considered under the proposed Nagpur Metro Phase-3 project.
Kamptee Corridor under Nagpur Phase II
The Kamptee corridor will continue to be the longest route under Nagpur Metro Phase-2. With the new extension, the existing 13-km Automotive Square-Kanhan River corridor will be extended to around 14.4 km, improving metro connectivity for people living in Kanhan and nearby areas.
The extended corridor will also feature two important engineering structures. These include the already planned balanced cantilever bridge over the Pili Nadi and the proposed 500-metre steel bridge across the Kanhan River. These structures will help carry the metro line safely into Kanhan town while improving transport facilities for thousands of daily commuters.
