Metro Line 9, whose first phase is expected to open soon, will start operations without platform screen doors (PSDs). This makes it the first metro corridor since Metro Line 1 began service in 2014 to run without PSDs. All metro lines opened after Line 1, such as Lines 2A and

7 between Andheri and Gundavali and the underground Line 3 from Aarey to Cuffe Parade, have been equipped with these safety doors.
Safety Inspection
The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) has started the compulsory safety inspection for Phase I of Metro Line 9. This section runs from Dahisar East to Kashigaon in Mira Bhayandar. The inspection is the last legal step required before passenger services can be launched.
Mumbai Metro Line 9
In April 2024, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) invited tenders for several systems related to Metro Line 9. These included trains, CBTC signalling, telecom systems, platform screen doors, and depot equipment. However, officials have not clearly stated whether the installation of PSDs has been postponed until the entire Line 9 project is completed along with the Line 7A extension connecting Gundavali to the T1 airport.
Mumbai Metro Line 7 Extension
Metro Line 9 is an extension of Metro Line 7 and has been planned so that both lines can operate smoothly together. Once CMRS approval is granted for Phase I, passengers will be able to travel from Kashigaon to Gundavali by changing trains at Dahisar and continuing their journey on Line 7, which is already fully operational and has PSDs at all stations.
Platform screen doors are considered an important safety feature, especially on busy metro routes. They help prevent accidental falls onto the tracks, stop unauthorized entry, reduce suicide attempts, and manage crowds during rush hours. Since PSDs will not be available initially, stations on Line 9 will depend on traditional safety arrangements such as clear platform markings, warning signs, CCTV cameras, and staff supervision.
In India, PSDs are already in use on Chennai Metro's underground stations, several Delhi Metro lines including Yellow, Pink, Magenta, and the Airport Express, as well as Noida Metro and Kolkata Metro's Line 2. More cities, including Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur, are also planning to introduce PSDs in the future.
