Mumbai Water Metro Project to Become the City's Important Public Transport System

The Maharashtra government has taken a major step to make water transport an important part of Mumbai's public transport system. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the Mumbai Water Metro will become the largest water transport network in the world for any city.

Mumbai Water Metro Project Cost

The project is estimated to cost Rs. 6,066 crore. It will include 44 terminals and 33 water routes, covering a total distance of 340 km across Mumbai. To support eco-friendly travel, the government plans to introduce 203 electric and hybrid boats, helping reduce pollution while improving connectivity.

Maharashtra Maritime Board signed an MoU

The Maharashtra Maritime Board has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with M. Zoya Marine Services Pvt. Ltd. for the Mumbai Water Metro Project. Under the agreement, the company will build and supply modern, environmentally friendly water metro vessels. It will also set up a new electric boat manufacturing facility in Talawane, Sawantwadi Taluka, Sindhudurg district. The manufacturing unit will be developed on 22 acres of land with an investment of around Rs. 150 crore.

Mumbai Water Project to be Completed by 2031

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the Mumbai Water Metro is expected to be completed by 2031. Once operational, the network is likely to serve around 7.5 crore passengers every year. The project aims to provide people with a convenient alternative to road and railway transport, making daily travel faster and more comfortable.

How will the Mumbai Water Metro Project Improve Connectivity?

The Mumbai Water Metro is expected to improve connectivity between different parts of the city while reducing traffic congestion on roads. It will also promote cleaner and more sustainable transport through the use of electric and hybrid vessels. The project is seen as a major initiative by the Maharashtra government to modernise Mumbai's transport system and offer residents a reliable, efficient, and environmentally friendly mode of travel.
