In a fresh move to ease Mumbai’s daily traffic chaos, the city is set to welcome 11 high-speed electric ferries that promise to change how people travel. Called Candela P-12, these ferries are unlike regular boats—they glide smoothly over water using hydrofoils, offering a cleaner, faster, and quieter way to commute.

Smooth Rides, Less Traffic
Originally launched in Stockholm in late 2024, these Swedish-designed ferries are now coming to India, thanks to JalVimana, a Mumbai-based company. These ferries ride above the water using special underwater wings, which reduce resistance, save energy, and lower noise, perfect for a crowded and often polluted city like Mumbai.
Candela CEO Gustav Hasselskog called it a “groundbreaking project” and believes it will completely transform how Mumbai moves, using the city's coastline more effectively.
From Hours to Minutes
The first ferry routes will link the Gateway of India to Alibaug and Elephanta Island, cutting travel time from nearly three hours by road to just 30 minutes by sea. Plans are also in place for a direct connection between Navi Mumbai airport and central Mumbai, forming part of a larger plan to create a green transport corridor along Maharashtra’s coastline.
India-Sweden Collaboration
The deal was sealed during Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal’s visit to Stockholm. JalVimana’s CEO, Niraj Thakur, called it “a giant leap for Mumbai’s sustainable future.” The state is now aiming to add thousands more electric vessels in the coming years, reinforcing its commitment to eco-friendly transportation.
These futuristic ferries not only aim to reduce road traffic but also promise a better quality of life—fewer traffic jams, cleaner air, and quieter travel. If all goes as planned, Mumbaikars could soon be gliding across the sea instead of crawling through traffic, getting to their destination faster and with less stress.
