Rainfall is expected to reduce in Mumbai and nearby districts this week, bringing some relief after weeks of heavy monsoon showers. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), only light to moderate rain is likely from August 5 onwards. As the rain eases, temperatures in the city are expected to increase, with the maximum temperature reaching 32 degrees Celsius over the next few days.
Mumbai Rain Alert on 5 August
The IMD has stated that Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar are likely to receive only light to moderate rainfall during the coming days. No weather alert has been issued for these districts until at least August 7, indicating no immediate threat of heavy rainfall.
Rainfall recorded over the last 24 hours was much lower compared to previous days. Between Monday and Tuesday morning, Santacruz recorded 2.4 mm of rain, while Colaba received only 0.2 mm. This is a sharp drop from the previous day, when Mumbai received an average of 66 mm of rain in the eastern suburbs and 44 mm in the western suburbs.

In neighbouring Navi Mumbai, Belapur recorded 13 mm of rainfall, followed by Airoli and Digha with 12 mm each. Koparkhairane received 7 mm, while Nerul recorded 5 mm. Weather experts say the slowdown in rainfall is due to the absence of strong weather systems and weaker monsoon currents that usually bring moisture into the region.
The IMD has also forecast that daytime temperatures could cross 32 degrees Celsius, while evening temperatures are expected to remain between 26 and 27 degrees Celsius.
Although rainfall is expected to remain low this week, August is usually one of Mumbai's wettest months. On average, the city receives 561 mm of rainfall at Santacruz and 472 mm at Colaba during August. Last month, Mumbai recorded 66 per cent more rainfall than normal, helping increase water storage in the city's seven lakes to 89.5 per cent of their total capacity, ensuring a comfortable water supply for the coming months.
